4.1 Sealant Material Selection

Sealant Materials Attributes

Resin-Based vs. Glass Ionomer Materials

  • The effectiveness of resin-based dental sealants, as measured by sealant retention, has been demonstrated repeatedly.
  • The evidence remains mixed in terms of the effectiveness of glass ionomer sealants related to caries reduction and retention. Glass ionomer sealants are not as moisture sensitive as resin sealants and are easier to place.3,4,5

Filled vs. Unfilled Materials

  • When more filler than necessary to adjust viscosity is added to dental sealant materials, hardness increases, and ability to self-adjust decreases. Also, the penetrability of the sealant decreases with increased filler amount.
