Overview

This module provides a description and history of school-based dental sealant programs in the United States and in Maryland, discusses the rationale and evidence for these programs, and reviews the principles and policies of programs funded by the Maryland Department of Health—Office of Oral Health (OOH).

Learning Objectives

  • Explain what dental sealants are, and discuss their purpose.
  • Describe the characteristics of most children served by school-based dental sealant programs.
  • Explain the difference between school-based dental sealant programs and dental homes.
  • Describe risk factors that place children at high risk for dental caries.
  • Explain the importance of systematic reviews of the evidence on dental sealant effectiveness as it relates to school-based dental sealant programs.
